Intereach pledges to ‘March Forward’ for women’s equality

In the lead up to International Women’s Day on 8 March, Intereach is embracing the theme ‘March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls’, reaffirming our commitment to gender equality and empowering women and girls in our workforce and communities.
With women and girls facing barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential, the UN Women Australia theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no-one is left behind.
As a champion for women, Intereach is proud that 87 per cent of our workforce is female, with women holding 42 of 53 leadership positions. Bucking the national trend, where women make up just 22 per cent of CEOs, and 37 per cent of key management personnel.
With current data showing it could take 133 years (or the year 2158) to achieve full gender parity, we must act now.
Our leadership structure, including our Co-CEO model shared by Yvette Buhagiar and Michelle Tai, reflects our belief in the power of diversity, collaboration, and inclusive leadership. Together with People, Culture, Quality & Risk General Manager Felicity Whorlow, they share their thoughts on how we can close the gap to achieve gender equality.

What does the ‘March Forward’ theme mean to you in your role as a female leader?
Michelle and Yvette (pictured left):
“It’s about more than just progress — it’s about lifting others as we go, ensuring women and girls have the tools, support, and encouragement they need to pursue their goals or step into leadership roles. As female leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example and foster workplace cultures that support and value women’s contributions. When we open doors for others, we move toward a truly equal future.”
Felicity:
“To me, March Forward means actively removing barriers, so all women feel empowered to pursue leadership roles. It means championing mentorship, flexible work arrangements, and career development so more women can step into positions of influence without limitations.”
What strategies or actions do you believe are critical to achieving gender equality?
Michelle and Yvette:
“We need proactive strategies — not just conversations. We must continue to challenge biases, advocate for fair policies, mentor the next generation, and create pathways for all women and girls to thrive. At Intereach, we have implemented leadership development programs, flexible work options, inclusive policies, and clear career pathways to ensure women — of all ages and backgrounds — have equal opportunities to grow and lead.”
Felicity:
“Violence against women is one of the greatest barriers to gender equality, preventing women from reaching their full potential. We have strengthened our Domestic and Family Violence Policy to support our employees affected by domestic and family violence, making sure they are safe at work, know their rights and can access the resources and support they need. As women still face systemic challenges, we need to focus on long-term solutions, such as pay equity, leadership training for young women, and ensuring diverse voices are represented in decision-making.”

What advice would you offer to women in our communities to help them thrive?
Michelle and Yvette:
“Believe in yourself, take up space, and never be afraid to use your voice. Seek out opportunities, find mentors who uplift you, and advocate for yourself and others. True progress happens when we support one another, challenge outdated norms, and demand the respect and opportunities we deserve.”
Felicity (pictured left):
“To the women in our communities — whether you’re a leader, a caregiver, a student, or a professional — you are valuable, capable, and deserving of every opportunity. Keep learning, building networks, and pushing for what you want. At Intereach, we are here to support you, providing the information and services you need to feel empowered and live your life on your own terms.”
